Chris Peña
As Executive Editor of NBCLatino.com, Peña leads all aspects of the business, including coordination of the technical development, staffing and hiring, editorial vision and sales and marketing. He also oversees the day-to-day operation of the website and manages a team of editors, producers and contributors
A 16-year veteran of television news, Chris is tasked with building a site for NBC News aimed at Hispanics in English. The site aims to super-serve an under-addressed market: the more than 25 million U.S. Hispanic online news consumers who prefer content in English.
Prior to this, he served as Assistant News Director at the NBC-owned station in Chicago -- the third largest television market. In this role, he supervised nearly 100 employees and had oversight of the station’s daily newsgathering, as well as the long-form special projects group. His team produced 29 hours of weekly news programming, and more than 20 hours of original programming on its digital channel. Chris led the station’s transition to a content center model. The process involved a reorganization of newsroom roles, the introduction of new technology and an increased emphasis on multi-platform distribution.
Before Chicago, Chris was Executive Producer of late news at NBC-Owned WTVJ-TV in Miami – the 16th largest television market. He led the station to several ratings wins, and helped launch a 7 PM newscast. Chris leveraged his bilingual background to forge ties with the Telemundo newsroom. The relationship strengthened NBC’s coverage in a Spanish-dominant market. Chris was previously News Director of Telemundo Houston. Chris led the transition into a new facility, new technologies and continuous coverage of two catastrophic weather events on the gulf coast: Hurricanes Katrina & Rita. As Hurricane Rita approached, Telemundo Houston remained on the air for more than 40 hours over a 3-day period, keeping Houston’s Spanish-language community informed about the impending danger.
Chris is a 1996 graduate of the University of Houston.
